My Brother has been diagnosed with Frontal Lobe dementia and is cummrently in a secure ward in a long term care facility. Do you think that adding coconut oil to his diet would help, or slow down his progression? If so what would be the best mechanism to get it into his diet and what dosage?
Thanks for your research and help.

Dr. Newport,
Just curious whether you have looked into Vitamin k2 and alzheimers? It appears it might be important too from an article I read on the Westin Price Foundation.

Hi Dr Newport. Greetings from Australia. I have suffered from chronic severe depression and anxiety disorder (and various diagnoses of dysthymia and cyclothymia) for around 20 years. In an effort to cure myself I left full time work and studied Naturopathy (natural therapies), experimenting with various diets and eating regimes. What I found worked best for me was a diet that omitted carbohydrtes and was high in meats and vegetables. This high ketone-producing diet made me feel the best I have ever felt in my life. I was stable, no depressive symptoms or anxiety. I tend to agree with Dr Robert Su that carbohydrates can kill.
I still maintain a low carb diet but do take some these days which I seem to tolerate in small doses. Though I still feel best with out any carbs.
Keep up thegood work and I hope Steve is doing okay.
Regards

Hi Dr. Newport,
My 86 yr old father has a form of dementia, and he is currently in a nursing home.
Anytime that I mention supplement for my father, I am told that he can't have them - the doctor won't order them as he says that the food will supply my father's nutrients which is not true at all.
The food is all canned and packaged foods, and my father recently developed a thyroid problem.
I ordered several of Dr Brownstein's books (see his website - www.drbrownstein.com) in
order to learn the issues that he speaks about.
I would like to give my father some coconut oil but I highly suspect that he can't have that
either.
What to do?
Thank you!
Lise from Maine

Thanks so much for sharing your findings with the world!! A family member emailed me a link to your CBN interview and I began scouring the internet for information. At 35 my husband was diagnosed with Spinal Cerebral Ataxia (of the unknown type) and then diagnosed by another doctor with MSA. After finding some medical journal articles about the brain metabolism in these patients and lack of responsiveness of their neuron-receptors, I am excited about starting my now 47 year old husband on your diet recommendations. How wonderful it would be if he could put his walker away and enjoy improved mobility. Thank you, thank you, thank you and God bless you.

Hi Mary,
Really good interview and news clip. Lets hope some funding will come for the Ketone ester.
We must change the predominant paradigm and change the world.
Have you done any research in Vitamin K2, the Mk-4 variety?
"Vitamin K2 supports the enzymes within the brain that produce an important class of lipids called sulfatides. The levels of vitamin K2, vitamin K-dependent proteins and sulfatides in the brain decline with age; the decline of these levels is in turn associated with age-related neurological degeneration. Comparisons of human autopsies associate the early stages of Alzheimer's disease with up to 93 percent lower sulfatide levels in the brain." Study done by Han X, M Holtzman D, McKeel DW Jr, Kelley J, Morris JC. Substantial sulfatide deficiency and ceramide elevation in very early Alzheimer's disease: potential role in disease pathogenesis. J Neurochem. 2002; 82(4): 809-18. Taken from this link http://www.westonaprice.org/fat-soluble-activators/x-factor-is-vitamin-k2#brain
Ian, my husband is now on this Vitamin K2 because we found he had bad osteoporosis along with Alzheimers. Maybe his Alzheimers will also be helped along with his bone density with this form of Vitamin K2.
Have you checked Steve's bone density?
It seems to me that there is a link with these diseases and could go hand in hand with each other.
Ian also has Atherosclerosis which often goes hand in hand with Osteoporosis.

Can LouAna refined coconut oil be used or should a person use only the organic extra virgin coconut oil to benefit dementia?

Dr Newport, My wife's Alzheimer's started in 2006, in 2009 I remember reading Suzanne de la Monte's research as a diabetic educator and bringing the article to her Internist. There is so much popular science, phony research, so many hoaxes that I overlooked coconut oil - figuring yeah right. My wife suffered a seizure on the 16th, I tested her and her MMSE is 3. Her brother forwarded the CBN video to me, I am so pleased to see the very real research behind all of this. I do not know if it is going to work but I am following your current regimen as best I can MCT and Coconut oil 3TBSP TID, fish oil 1000mg cap TID. I am holding on and heartened to see as recent as December 29 Steve is still doing well, cannot tell you what that means. I have hope now, and am praying to see results in a couple weeks.

Thank You so much! My brother in-law sent me a link for the 700 club interview on Facebook. I watched it, ordered the book, we had heard about coconut oil being healthy, but not about it fueling the brain. My husband has dementia of some kind, they havent really told me much. What have we got to lose, I am trying to get as much in him as I can. You are my hero. Georgia Thomlison

Dr. Newport,
I'm a nurse working in the OR. I was diagnosed last 2008 with Fibromyalgia. Thanks be to GOD, I'm doing fine & working but I stay away from stress, if possible. But the issue that I noticed with me is that it seems I cannot verbalize person's names or occupation right away, stuff like that. I was told that it's just Fibro fog so I'm dealing with it. I'm also praying hard to GOD that HE will restore my mind. I saw the 700 Club segment about your husband's Alzheimer's & you found out about this Coconut oil that has helped reverse the Alzheimer's symptoms. I would like to know if this could help my mind's memory. I saw Coconut oil that has this medium chain triglycerides. Ketones were not mentioned as one of its contents. Thank you for answering my question. Or you could direct me to learn more of this. Thanks again. Cristina

My husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a bit over 5 years ago. I bought your book and started him on the coconut oil. However, everytime that I try introducing the MCT oil, he gets diarrhea. I was only adding one tsp of the MCT oil to 2 TBSP of coconut oil 3 times a day. What do I do? Incidently, he loves the fudge that I made with the recipe from your book.
