Cholesterol and Saturated Fats - the Myth

I just finished watching a very enlightening lecture by Dr. David Diamond, Director of the Neuroscience Collaborative at University of South Florida, entitled "How Bad Science and Big Business Created the Obesity Epidemic." For those who believe that you should eat a low fat diet and that taking statins to reduce cholesterol and minimizing saturated fat in the diet will prevent death from heart attacks, this will turn your thinking upside down.

  • HI, I read your interview about a year ago and found your blog just days ago. Great content!

You got some new readers, mostly from Finland I believe!

Are you familiar with prof Loren Cordain who writes on Paleo Diet? He now believes coconut oil is neutral in heart health because of intestinal antimicrobial effects. His overall opinion on saturated fat coctail from red meat is still dangerous though.

Many recent meta-analyses ie Siri-Tarino et al and Ramsden et al. seem to agree that saturated fats are neutral toward heart health but this still does not undermine that changing some of them to Omega 3/6 is beneficial.

What's your take on the subject?

  • I definitely agree!

I used to think that cholesterol is so bad that I needed to get rid of it. Then I started to read online, and found out that we actually need cholesterol. What we should reduce is not cholesterol, but inflammation instead!

I wrote an article entitled "Preventing Heart Disease - Why Natural Ways to Lower Cholesterol Are Useless"

I'd love to spread awareness on this.

  • Tom Naughton covers much of the same information and is much easier to listen to and watch.

  • I found this article today
Drug side effect linked with increased health risks for over 65s

I think it would be worthwhile for you to read the item at the following link. I believe this could be important to many of you. Please remember though to discuss any changes you would like to make to your medication with your GP and don't just stop taking or giving prescribed medication.

  • hi stumbled on your great blog while researching alzheimers which is rampant in my husbands family.
at the age of 18 i was diagnosed with familial high cholestrol. over the years i have resisted the statins while trying everything as i felt the drugs would only harm my liver futher. the strangest thing was though the doctor told me at the time under no circumstances to eat any coconut products esp ice cream. at that age i never knew it was the basis for ice cream manufacture. i have to wonder now was this part of big pharma's plan to pump the drugs while prohibiting anything that may do any good.
keep up the good work it is appreciated

  • I've been on a high-fat, ketogenic diet for 9 months. My triglycerides plummeted and other cholesterol numbers improved, FWIW.

As for statins and carbs, here is a page full of excellent articles: http://people.csail.mit.edu/seneff/

  • Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconut harvested from the coconut palm. Throughout the tropical world, it has provided the primary source of fat in the diets of millions of people for generations. It has various applications in food, medicine, and industry. Coconut oil is very heat-stable, which makes it suited to methods of cooking at high temperatures like frying. Because of its stability, it is slow to oxidize and, thus, resistant to rancidity, lasting up to two years due to high saturated fat content.

  • Hello I am not real good at this but have seen your studies and wanted to ask you some questions that I am cluless on. My dad has parkinsens and Alzimers and is somewhat not good. I am confused I have been giving him Coconut oil with 62%MCT but do I give him that plus MCT oil and if so how much? Not improving a hole lot but I am not sure on amount and if use of both oils. Also do I put him on the Kentogenic diet also? SO confused but I want to see if I can help my dad and also he is on meds for both parkinson and Alt should I leave him on this? It seems that they might sometimes make him worse. thanks for all you do DR.

  • I am baffled I happen to be providing him Coconut essential oil with 62%MCT but do I give him that as well as MCT

By Anonymous Subing, At February 2, 2012 10:04 PM

  • Why the 9/3 ratio stated in your book for Steve if as you seem to imply in blog MCT is not close to providing same impact as Coconut oi?

  • Hi! I noticed that the Louana oil in the video has 12 grams of satureated fat. I thought saturated was bad for you. I have blockages, so I am skeptical about taking this. I hope someone can answer this for me. Thanks for your help!

  • In one of your earliest postings you mentioned l-ribose and caffeine. Are you still giving these to Steve? [Sorry but I posted this same request somewhere else].
