Steve's 3rd Anniversary
I posted an update about Steve on my website (www.coconutketones.com) in February 2011 and I am pleased to say that three months later things are going even better than they were at that time. He had a setback when he was on prednisone for gout during the holidays, but at this point he seems to have recovered from that and is back to his baseline about where he was this time last year.

Hi Doctor. Is it safe to be on coconut Oil if you have high cholestrol My husband has high cholestrol and is taking 10M liptor, he was on 40M for the longest time and asked the Dr if she can reduce it. Is Conconut Oil ok for hime to take. He is 59 years old and has dementia. Thanks if its is safe I will go and buy it right away but I am afraid it might make his cholestrol go higher.

Anna, please see my next post, a link to a lecture by a researcher at University of South Florida about the cholesterol and saturated fat myths.
If coconut oil increases cholesterol it is usually good (HDL) choleserol. Most doctors don't know this, but you should prbably check first with his doctor if you are worried about it.

Can you please offer some advice on how to persuade nursing home doctors or outside doctors to try the coconut oil?
My mother lives out of state in a nursing home, diagnosed with vascular dementia. She sees an outside neurologist and also a geriatric psychiatrist. The neurologist seems like he would be the most open to this. Her primary doctor is also one of the nursing home doctors and I don't think she would be receptive to this, but haven't asked.
She also takes medications for seizures and is on a low dose of seroquel to manange some pyschiatric symptoms.
I would love to have her try this, but am frustrated by our situation with no family near by and having to depend on others. I do visit frequently and did try Coconut Oil on my own for a few days. I've thought of hiring my own outside aide(i'm her guardian), but feel conflicted about doing this behind the doctor's backs.
However, I'm afraid if I bring this off they will say no. Seems like most traditional physicians aren't open to things unless they have been scientifically tested.
The C.O seems so miraculous though that I really want to try it. My mother is on so many medications already that to see something that is natural, a food product produce results is very inspiring.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
C.S.

Wonderful to hear of Steves health, and that it is doing even better.
Much health to him, and to others.
Just would like to ask if the contact email address

I received an unmailed notice.
Just would like to ask.
thanks so much

Hi Dr Mary, Thanks for your great blog it is such an encouragement. You say that Steve is ApoE 4+ does that mean he has the two alleles of 4 or just the one and do you think it makes any difference with one or 2 a to susceptibility to Alzheimers. I am a 58 year old female with ApoE 4/2 so have one 2 allele and 1 4 allele. Supposedly the 2 is protective over the 4 but information varies on this.
I currently have no signs of dementia or Alzheimers and would like to keep it that way hence my appreciation of your information. No Alzheimers in the family though on one side most died of cancer before 75 so can't really tell.
May God bless you both and your work.

Hello Doctor, Thank you for your research and your posting the details on this blog. My husband's father died of Alzheimers and since, it has been a cause for concern in our houeshold.
We have recently changed our diet to something similar to what you list in your blog. Our son (13) was diagnosed with a vocal tic in August 2010. We were told by his doctor that it was common in boys his age and more than likely it would go away. It persisted for more than nine months and then it got WORSE!
In May 2011 we started him on Lutimax, a nutritional supplement that within minutes changed his countenance, within hours reduced the number of "noises" he made from 20-30 a minute to a few per minute, within a few days he was 98% tic free. His diet had a lot to do with the changes, too. We made all the changes you recommend to your readers below.
Today, two months after starting the Lutimax, our son is 99% tic free. PTL! I write to suggest you may want to look into Lutimax for your husband. The maker of the product has had great results with treating neurological conditions of all kinds, including ALS, dementia, alzheimers, etc. My mom volunteers in his office on occasion. Any ailment we had she used to suggest we try Lutimax. We joked with her that it was a "cure-all". Now that we have seen the results, firsthand, we don't joke about it anymore.
Coconut oil is something I added to our diets several months ago without even knowing the beneficial properties of it. I love cooking with it! And now, after reading your report I will continue to cook with it and add it anywhere I can to our diets.
Also, your husbands gout...My husband was on a drug several years ago for gout. That was until we went to refil his prescription and found out it was taken off the market because it "caused sudden death". We found a product called "Gout Care" by Smith and Smith industries. My husband used it for several months and has not had a gout flare up in several years. It's all natural and comes with a specific diet to follow for at least a few weeks in order to get the uric acid build up depleted.
I didn't realize how much I was writing, sorry. But, I hope it helps you or someone else checking your posts. God bless you and your husband.

I would like to also say God bless you and your husband - I am going to tell my mother right away in the morning (when she and Dad get up) about the coconut oil - I am here at their house, to help take turns so Mom can sleep in case Dad wakes up (although by some miracle, we have had three good nights where he has slept through, just getting up to use the powder room and then going right back to bed rather than wanting to stay up). Consequently, I am feeling pretty good myself and so went on the computer to look up things and just happened to read about the coconut oil. My stepdad will be 94 years old this week. He has some kind of dementia, though we don't know for sure if it is really Alzheimer's (but I recall that Mother said that the doctor some time ago had asked him to draw a clock and that did not work out too well). Dad is physically quite strong, can walk around, eats well - is able to feed himself, put on his clothes, watches tv with us. Lately, we went to Toys R Us to get a Hannah Montana Karaoke machine (least expensive one we could find) so we get these CD+G's with songs that are familiar to him - I sing the songs to him and he is reading along with me, even reading out loud, almost singing. We also sing God Bless America and the Star Spangled Banner every day, as well as a few favorites of his. I am not any kind of a good singer, but I try to do it in an exuberant way with him to bring out his own personality, which seems to us somehow a key to making his memory work better. Also, we found a Timex watch on sale at JC Penney's - one with a very simple, plain face (not like the fancy one with all the gadgets that he used to wear) - so, we try to get him to look at it - he still asks us what time it is, so now we ask him to look at his watch. Reading the article about your husband, I wonder if we could try to get Dad to draw a clock again after we start the coconut oil.
It is very beautiful and heartening to hear about a doctor who is thinking outside the box and that your husband is still doing so well.
