Some YouTube testimonials - Alzheimer's and Coconut Oil

There are two very interesting videos posted on by people with Alzheimer's who have had dramatic responses to coconut oil, as well as a video from a man whose "brain fog" lifted with coconut oil. If you go to YouTube and do a search for Alzheimer's and coconut oil they will pop up. One is titled: Our Story: Alzheimer's and coconut oil; Ian Blair Hamilton and Cassie Bond; the second is called "Bruce is overcoming dementia..." and the third "Brain Fog and Coconut Oil".

We are having a good summer. Steve seems to be very stable for the past six months after recovering from his setback during the holidays that seemed to be related to taking prednisone for a gout flare-up, and he is about the same as he was a year ago. He is still taking a mixture of MCT and coconut oil 3 tablespoons three times a day and also a fourth dose at bedtime of 2 tablespoons, which was added when he was having some difficulty sleeping and seemed a bit more confused in the morning. He is now sleeping well and back to baseline in the morning.

  • Interesting about the sleep effect. Some people have anxious reactions to coconut oil or especially MCT oil. Has Steve tried either by itself before bedtime?

  • I extended my wife's life threatened by Glioblastoma, a fatal brain tumor with 1 year's survival expectancy, to 26 months by using several alternative supplements, I have been fighting her progressive vascular dementia, which is possibly caused by radiation, for the last 10 months. I have tried hyperbaric oxygen therapy and vinpocetine but made no success. My wife cannot talk, has difficulty in eating, and is totally bed-ridden in the hospital.

What is strange is that when she cannot eat for a couple of days, they give her IV shot of glucose and then she gets better at eating and swallowing.

I googled the relationship between glucose and dementia and finally found your site. I read your pdf file "WHAT IF THERE WAS A CURE FOR

Although my wife's condition is much worse than that of your husband, I will try coconut oil for my wife. The lack of specific mention of coconut oil's effect for vascular dementia in all documents of your site is one thing that make me hesitant. But I have gained no result with one month of vinpocetine and as you said your guideline, I have nothing to lose.

I ordered peter paul virgin coconut oil, which seems to meet requirements in your guidlines, such as non-hydrogenated and no transfat.

I do hope this will work for my wife.

Thank you for making available the information on coconut oil.

  • How does one take coconut oil? Straight or mixed with some liquid?

  • How do you take coconut oil.

  • Do you take coconut oil straight

By Anonymous Anonymous, At August 14, 2011 at 2:43 PM

  • I often take it straight or give it straight to my 2.5 year old daughter. She loves it. More often we put it on warm cereal for breakfast--it melts and you barely notice it anymore.

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, a medium-chain fat that is important for brain development in children. It is one of the few sources, the other main one being breast milk.

  • I have really had my life changed for the better since taking the coconut/mct oils. Thank you Dr. Mary!

My Lipid panel has been terrible, no matter what I did. I went to a high fat diet and part of my fat is/was coconut/mct oils mixed 50/50 like you say on your other site. My Lipids got really good! My doctor was shocked. My LDL had dropped to 89 and my HDL had raised to 63 my triglycerides had lowered to 98. I had previously tried everything, including Lovastatin, which didn't really help all that much. I got off the Lovastatin and started low carb.

Nothing helped, but the oils did! They also have helped my type 2 diabetes and I am dropping weight, slowly and steadily. I am up to 6 Tablespoons of the oil mix per day. 2 with each meal. I also have upped my Magnesium and Vitamin D. My doctor told me I had the blood work of a 20 year old (I am over 60, and previously had been in terrible health). I know part of my improvement is my very low carb diet, but I was on that for 10 months and my Lipid panels were still bad, but the lipids were improved by going to a high fat and including coconut/mct oil. I was not aware they might help sleep.

I will start adding a dose at bedtime in addition to my calcium, zinc and magnesium.

PS: you said to use the coconut/mct oil in place of other fats, but I didn't find I gained weight with the addition of the oils. Maybe that is because I eat very low carb. 30 carbs or less a day in low carb veg is all my carb consumption. I have also managed to lower my A1C to 5.4 and I think it will be less next time.

    Thank you again!

  • For Sunny Lee - what a wonderful advocate for your wife! You might also try using the coconut oil externally - esp when your wife can't eat! I massage it into my throat, esp if I am exposed to a 'bug' of some kind. This spring, my 6 year old granddaughter had a bad cough, & her dad told me that after trying several other things, he rubbed some coconut oil on her throat at bedtime, & she stopped coughing & was able to get to sleep!
I am a massage therapist, & since using coconut oil for massage, several of my clients have had skin fungus clear up (the anti-fungal effect of MCF)!

I read Mary & Steve's story several years ago, & have been using OG coconut oil for all my cooking since then. I also make coconut milk kefir, & drink a cup or so a day. I use it like sour cream on foods, in smoothies, in salad dressing, etc. I also have less brain fog since making this shift!
My daughter's family & I are gluten & mostly dairy free, & coconut oil/milk are great options for folks wanting to avoid dairy.

I do use olive oil for dressing, but try to avoid unsaturated oils (canola, soy, etc). I take a good brand of fish oil, & use flax seeds as another source of omega 3 fats.
I am so grateful for your work to get the word out, Mary, & glad Steve continues to be stable!

  • I am new to your website-just found out about your discovery in the course of striving to help your dear husband - it reminded me of the story of Alonzo's Oil - people loving their child so and racking their brains, thinking outside the box to find a way to help them. I would like to know more about how the coconut oil helps to get a good night's sleep - my Mom and I, that is one of our number one priorities, it seems - for all of us to be able to sleep, and we don't want to conk out Dad with any sedatives - he is able to get up and go to the powder room in the middle of the night and we don't want him to be wobbly or not be able to get there in time because he is too sleepy - we think it would be terribly demoralizing to him). Also,
what do you mean by "back to baseline in the morning"

By Blogger suejeanne, At August 27, 2011 at 11:05 PM

  • To Sunny Lee: There is work reported in a coupe of papers by Dr. Thomas Seyfried regarding use of caloric restriction and the ketogenic diet for glioblastoma. His group has found that in lab animals the tumors shrink by as much as 80% and they published a case study of a woman whose tumor disappeared over about six weeks while on this diet. The concept here is that many cancerous tumors are unable to use ketones as a fuel but thrive on glucose. Thus if carbohydrate and protein (which can be converted to carbohydrate) are minimized and high fat is used instead, ketone levels will be high, providing fuel to the brain and all other organs, except the liver where ketones are made, and the tumor will shrink due to low availability of sugar. He presented this at the Ketogenic Diet Symposium Oct 2010 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
For anyone who needs help with the ketogenic diet, please look at these websites: in the US, in the UK www/ Both websites were created by parents of children with severe epilepsy who responded to the ketogenic diet. They will give help with ketogenic diet for other disorders as well.

  • Dr. Newport,
Thank you very much for the information on ketogenic diet. After trying coconut oil for 15 days, I stopped it as her symptoms got worse and also I found no reliable information on the efficacy of coconut oil for radiation-induced dementia. I switched to the use of various antioxidants to fight her symptoms of late radiation damage. But I will keep in mind the potential of ketogenic diet including coconut oil for GBM,

I will look for more information based on your advice. Thank you.

  • This is just a wonderful news knowing that we still have hope for our beloved ones suffering from Alzheimers. Coconut oil is going back in my kitchen cupboard.

By Blogger fitness well, At September 23, 2011 at 6:42 AM

  • To say that I am grateful for your information doesn't begin to cover it. I have been the caregiver for my parents with AD since 2004. It started helping my mother with my father and 2 years into it my mother received the same diagnosis. It was unimaginable this could happen to both of them. My mother was one angry woman knowing her fate was to be the same after caring for her husband. We started buying twice the Aricept and Namenda. We lost my father in 2007 and after five years of the meds for my mother they were no longer working. It was time to stop them and let go. We have always been very health conscious about natural unprocessed foods so I began to research foods for AD and found you and coconut oil. Thre has been nothing short of a miracle at my house! The improvement my mother has shown has been rapid and dramatic! She has really come out of her shell and the many blank faces have disappeared. She innitiates activities she's long since stopped and she tells me she feels good and connected. When I asked her what AD was like she would tell me it's just blank, nothing going on in her head. Hope is a powerful thing and your info has given it back to me. I tell everyone I know about coconut oil. My friend told me about the Tn lady basketball coach and I even found her email address to tell her about it. (she wrote back to say she is taking coconut oil) I also emailed Anderson Cooper to tell the story of coconut oil. I hope you will go on a huge book promotion when your's is released to spread the word. There are far too many people who don't have the luxury of time to wait for the drug companies to come up with something and furthermore won't be able to afford their magic pill. AD is so huge they will take full advantage of cashing in.

  • what type of coconut oil does one give an Alzheimers patients? and what is the dosage?

By Blogger Frugal4U, At September 26, 2011 at 7:59 PM

  • Dr. Mary, I just sent some coconut oil to my MIL for her to give to my FIL who has Alzheimer's. Now I'm getting nervous about it. He also has type 2 diabetes. Do I need to worry about DKA?

By Anonymous Anonymous, At September 29, 2011 at 8:53 AM

  • No, you do not need to worry that coconut oil will cause DKA. The levels are a tiny fraction of those seen in DKA. Some diabetics have seen that coconut oil and MCT oil help them maintain better blood sugar levels. All organs, except the liver can use ketones and this could offer protection to eyes, kidneys, etc., as well as the brain for diabetics, since they will be provided with an alternative fuel for someone who have insulin resistance and trouble getting glucose into the cells.

To Elizabeth Johnson, thank you so much for sharing your mother's story. I hope her improvements continues!

  • Canola and other refined oils "have been shown to play a role in the cause of a number of degenerative diseases." Keep the extra virgin olive oil but do not use it for high heat cooking. Coconut oil will do the job in a much safer fashion.

  • Good Information for coconut oil

By Blogger Estefania, At February 5, 2012 at 8:04 AM

  • Colleen said,
I started giving my 89 year old mother coconut oil last Friday. On Tuesday the 5th day she was talking to us in complete sentences and answering our questions. Then I read the book and increased her dose from 2 tablespoons to 7 tablespoons and had a raving lunatic on my hands. I immediately decreased to 2 tablespoons a day, morning and evening and we use it to cook supper. Tonight she was talking and better. Do you find you have to work up to a larger dose? Mom only weighs 94 lbs. so perhaps she needs a slower uptake. What do you think? Our diet is Dr. Fuhrmann's --high plant food, low carbs, low protein, no sugar or salt.

  • Dear Dr. Mary,
We Thank God for you every day since finding your site and using the coconut oil. Our lives are so much better than before and we are so grateful for all the research you have done.

  • Dr. Newport, I am having knee replacement surgery on June 11.I have to stop taking everything except prescriptions for a week before. I asked one nurse about coconut oil and she hesitated and said "I guess you need to stop it. " I don't see why, when it isn't a blood thinner. At least I don't think it is and I am afraid NOT to take it. I feel more alive and awake when I do.
