Update about Steve, Greece, the ketone ester, IVIG
Our trip to Greece was quite an adventure - our younger 24 year old daughter Joanna came with us to stay with Steve while I attended some of the meetings at the conference. My presentation went very well and was well received. There were researchers and doctors from around the world, so I am hopeful this will get the message out to many more. Steve held up amazingly well. I took him by the hand when getting off and on public transportation to make sure we didn't lose each other. We got to see some wonderful sites in Athens, London and NYC, but in the end we were all very happy to be home.
This May 21 will mark two years since Steve started taking coconut oil. He had many improvements, some immediate and others more gradual that became obvious over several months or even longer. In many respects he is still doing better than two or even three years ago. None of the physical symptoms or visual disturbance have returned. His has retained many memories of events that have taken place in the last year or longer. He continues to volunteer in the warehouse at the hospital where I work, putting stickers on supplies and moving boxes. He has also gotten his riding lawn mower out recently several times to cut the grass and had no trouble working it. For those who don't know, there are several controls that need to be operated simultaneously to get it running. There is no need to cut grass in our area from November to March, so I was biting my nails wondering whether he would remember how to operate the tractor this year and, alas, he does. On the other hand, we have seen some new problems since the last update. He has had setbacks when he has an illness, with more confusion. This has been most obvious to me when he has a fever blister. I always worry that "this is it," but he manages to bounce back, although not always completely. He has developed a problem in recent months at times with understanding the relationship of where we live to where the rest of his family lives. Usually after I explain this to him, he gets it. I do believe that overall, the use of coconut oil/MCT oil has taken us back in time at least two years and in many respects even longer. I don't know if we will beat it, but we have at least gotten a reprieve from this disease.
A pilot study for Parkinson's disease, using Dr. Veech's ketone ester, will soon begin. since the symptoms of this disease are more consistent from person to person and many are measurable physicla symptoms, he believes they will be able to know within one month if the ketone ester is effective. Clinical trials for Alzheimer's typically last 12-18 months or longer, due to the nature of the disease. We can be hopeful that if the results of the Parkinson's study are positive that more funding will be forthcoming for producing and studying the ketone ester.
Another promising treatment is IVIG (Gammagard and other brands). A pilot study for Gammagard was recently completed showing that there was no worsening of brain scans and there was improved mental function in people with AD over an 18 month period. IVIG has been used for people with immune deficiency for decades. It is pooled antibodies to many different types of infection from 100s of people and is given intravenously usually every two weeks. The company believes that it works by removing beta-amyloid plaque. Another possibility is that it controls a chronic or recurrent infection in the brain, such as the herpes simplex virus type 1 that causes fever blisters - work has been done by Dr. Ruth Itzhaki and others in England showing that this virus is present in the brains, and even within all of the beta-amyloid plaques they have looked at, of people with Alzheimer's who are APOE4+. The virus has also been shown to cause this plaque and also the classic tangles to form. For those who want to screen for the study look at www.clinicaltrials.gov and so a search for Alzheimer's and IVIG. There will be a list of centers who are recruiting now for the IVIG clinical trials.

Dr. Mary,
Do you have Steve on IVIG?
It is exciting all you are doing and discovering. Can't wait until your book comes out. When will that be?

Thanks for the update, Dr. Newport. Continued good luck to you!

Hi Dr. Newport, I just found your blog when I was looking into coconut oil.
I am my 80 year old mom's care giver, she has what we believe to be lewy Bodies Dementia. She hallucinates a lot about people, animals and different homes. She also has Cap-grass syndrome, she believes that there are 3 of me, one she likes a lot, one she has no opinion and one she doesn't like.
My mom isn't on any pharma meds. We see a naturopath doctor who prescribes natural remedies. They appear to be working well.
My mom has a kidney infection and a UTI, today she began an antibiotic, Ciprol. I read that coconut oil is good for the kidneys and UTI's. That's how I eventually found out about your success with your husband.
For the last few days, my mom has been speaking and finding her words. I just began giving her Coconut Milk Ice Cream.
I also notice that when my mom's cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar are elevated she will hallucinate. If any one is elevated, it will generate visitors.
We've changed her diet, mostly through experimentation. I make a lot of observations with foods that she eats and how it affects her.
I'm hopeful that once we cure the infection she'll do better.
I also read a study about R-Lipoic Acid and L-Acetyl Carnitine. The 2 amino acids can pass through the blood brain barrier. 500 mg Carnitine and 200 mg RLA is the dosage that my mom takes 2 times a day.
I have read that coconut oil helps the body absorb nutrients, including amino acids.
I wonder if the RLA, Carnitine and Coconut Oil will bring my mom back?
I'm really happy to have found you.

Dr Newport,
When you wrote, "He has had setbacks when he has an illness, with more confusion. This has been most obvious to me when he has a fever blister. I always worry that "this is it,"" I immediately thought of the following web page. And thought you NEED to read it and get your husband on a low carbohydrate diet.
http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/leukocytic_index.html
I have been following the Protein Power/Protein Power Lifeplan "diet" by Drs. Mary Dan Eades and Mike Eades since February 2002. Since that time I have been sick twice, bad enough to have to go to a doctor at a walk-in clinic. BOTH times I had "gone off the diet" and had sugary things to eat. Thanksgiving at my son's in-laws was the first - his mother-in-law is a fantastic cook, so how could I refuse. The second time was when I rode the Auto-Train back from Christmas in Florida. Again could not follow the diet as I should and picked up something on the train. At home and feeling out of sorts I unwisely ate some home canned apples that had been given to me as they felt easy on the stomach. Within the week I had bronchitis so bad that the coughing made me feel like I had been a punching bag.
Besides the low amount of carbohydrates I eat I also have been taking enough vitamin D to bring my blood serum level up to the low 100 range. While this is higher than recommended, having had prostate cancer I want to keep it on the high side as a preventative measure. These people have much good data/research on vitamin D.
http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/
I hope you can turn back your husbands Alzheimer’s symptoms just as I have done with my cancer. I have had NO medical treatment for my cancer. I attribute the Drs. Eades diet and a set of CAREFULLY selected (researched from university sources and Pubmed.gov) supplements, vitamins and minerals with my success (so far) at making the cancer regress. Statistics of my case; PSA 2.7 in 2000, 5.0 (2 week later retest 5.6) in Nov. 2001, positive biopsy June 2002 (7% in one of six cores, Gleason 3+3), PSA 5.2 July 2002, 3.7 Aug 2002, 2.5 Dec. 2002, and it has been below 3.5 since then. It bounces around of course and I check every three months.
Regards,
Larry Jensen

Hello Mary
I stumbled across your husbands exciting journey thru a colleague who sent me an article. I read the article with great enthusiasm over the fact that you discovered that food and diet is a great source for healing and health. And thou you've probably heard this a thousand times I still like to share it with you.
I urge you to contact the Hippocrates Health Institute in FL (http://www.hippocratesinst.org/) or the pH Miracle Living Center in CA (http://www.phmiracleliving.com/).

The fever blister is indicative of reactivated varicella zoster virus aka chicken pox as shingles.
IMHO the AD researchers should had criteria for VZV because this may be the smoking gun.
Why? Because VZV hides in neurons, anywhere in the body, be it parasympathetic, sympathetic, CNS, or even the brain.
If VZV hides in neurons in the brain, because the brain cannot feel pain, confusion and possibly ataxia, akathisia, and other neurological symptoms may occur.
I'd recently suffered shingles as result of VZV reactivation. From the end of September 2009 until a week ago I had depression and related mental health issues, and the VZV reactivation makes me suspect that it may be indirectly involved.
Of course, being Asian, depression is a reaction to being a visible minority.

Dear Dr Newport,,,
Thankyou for the idéa about coconutoil. I have the diagnosis Parkinsons Disease. Last year I started to do alternative treatments and developed a few new protocolls, "Opening-Brainmassage" resp "JERS". I got rid of 50 different symtoms last year, but still look for new ways to progress. After reading about your husband, I begun to take 2 teaspoons coconutoil at bedtime, 1 teasp after breakfast, and 1 teasp in the afternoon. Already the first mornings I felt better from sleep. After only 5 days my temporal muscles had a new substance containing. It was remarkable since I have been massaging their stringy structure for 20 years. Now I can trust in that my brain have energy through the night, which is good for my "Opening-Brainmassage". My dose is 1/3 of what you gave your husband, but it still works for me ? Is it really necessary to increase dosage to tablespoons ?
Parallell to the coconutoil, I started doing "rythmic movements" according to the swedish psychiatrist Harald Blomberg. These movements look like a joke, easy as they are to implement, but what they do is to stimulate the prefrontal cortex via cerebellum and basal ganglia.
Thanks to the coconutoil, my sleep is not distorted like before, and so I can keep the benefits from training "rythmic movements" in daytime. My balance is much better, my feet more flexible, and 2nd cervical vertebra, axis, has slided into it´s original place in the spine. For 19 years chiropracticers has struggled in vein to get it into right place, but with coconutoil and rythmic movements it happened by itself.
Thanks for the coconutoil-article// Ragnar

I have for years believed that organic coconut oil can be used for numerous issues that humans experience. I would also like to comment that adult stem cells released by the body can also have renewing health benefits. The only product I know that does this is stemenhance and if added to an organic regemin can help renew growth of new cells i organs, muscles as well as nerves in the brain. www.cshort.stemtechbiz.com please consider adding this to a regimen for health benefits.

Dr Newport,
Fascinated by your story!! I go to a clinic that uses IV chelation and nutrition therapy. I've had tremendous health benefits from both. Helping the body detox heavy metals and other toxins. I mention this because I meet people with all sorts of conditions who have experienced miracles. My doctor treats an array of people from lymt, to alzheimer, to parkinsons, and MS, etc. Injectiable Vit C is a main part of his protocal. I know it's helped people with shingles too, so why not herpes?
Anyway, here's a wonderful story of a man whose life was saved by IV Vit C. The doctors were ready to pull the plug on him because he had Swine Flu and Lymphoma.

Press on! There is so much out there in the natural realm that cures and heals that God created!

It is now 2015. Are there any ketone ester trials in the near future. Everything in this blog is at least 4 years old. I read Dr. Newport's book but can't find anything up to date. Medicine changes rapidly sometimes. I'm praying ketone trials have started. Please update this blog.
Thank you.
